Brushing & Flossing

Braces are a commitment to a healthier, straighter smile. However, they also require extra care and attention when it comes to oral hygiene. Properly cleaning your teeth with braces not only ensures a brighter smile at the end of your orthodontic journey but also prevents potential dental complications. Our orthodontist and team in San Antonio, Texas, recommended tips to keep your teeth and braces in optimal condition.

Brushing with Braces

  • Choose the Right Toothbrush: A soft-bristled or orthodontic toothbrush can navigate the nooks and crannies of braces without causing damage.
  • Begin at the Right Angle: Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums. Start brushing the outside and inside surfaces of your teeth using gentle circular motions.
  • Clean Brackets and Wires: Angle your toothbrush downwards on the upper teeth and upwards on the lower teeth to brush the brackets. Use a back-and-forth motion to clean the wires.
  • Brush After Every Meal: Ensure you brush after each meal to remove any food particles trapped in your braces.

Flossing with Braces

  • Use Wax-Coated Floss: This type of floss is less likely to get caught and tear on your braces.
  • Thread Carefully: Gently thread the floss behind the main wire of the brace before passing it between two teeth.
  • Move Gently: Once threaded, move the floss up and down the sides of both teeth, reaching beneath the gums. Remove the floss and rethread it for the next space.
  • Orthodontic Tools: Consider using orthodontic floss threaders or interdental brushes for easier navigation around braces.
